Usenet is a discussion system distributed worldwide through online resources. It consists of names of a set of news groups that are classified or ranked in order of their importance. Individuals with access to online systems and relevant software can post messages or articles to these news groups from where it can be connected or sent to other similar systems using various networks.

Some articles are screened by a moderator and approved for content before they are put up in these newsgroups. Usenet is available on a wide range of computer systems and networks but the bulk of the present day Usenet traffic is routed through the internet.

To stretch the definition further, Usenet can be compared to a set of two people who interchange articles within the newsgroup. There is often a great amount of confusion about the number of newsgroups that represent the Usenet.
