Usenet is a discussion system distributed worldwide through online resources. It consists of names of a set of news groups that are classified or ranked in order of their importance. Individuals with access to online systems and relevant software can post messages or articles to these news groups from where it can be connected or sent to other similar systems using various networks.

Some articles are screened by a moderator and approved for content before they are put up in these newsgroups. Usenet is available on a wide range of computer systems and networks but the bulk of the present day Usenet traffic is routed through the internet.

To stretch the definition further, Usenet can be compared to a set of two people who interchange articles within the newsgroup. There is often a great amount of confusion about the number of newsgroups that represent the Usenet. It is widely believed that the newsgroups listed in the article ‘Alternative Newsgroup Hierarchies’ broadly represents the Usenet better than anything else.

However, each Usenet site based on its specific regions and organizations is believed to make its own decisions about the set of groups available to its dedicated users. Newsgroups cannot be said to be a part of the internet even though they use the World Wide Web to reach their groups.

Usenet has tremendous potential in helping people share knowledge and get information about topics they are curious to know more about. The newsgroup has over the years grown into an important and highly significant resource for information on a wide variety of subjects.

Experts are used to share their tremendous knowledge on a particular topic that the person may want to know more about. In fact, Usenet can be used to share or access information about just about anything because it is the place where you are most likely to find it as compared to any other resource.

It is very likely that first time users will find Usenet highly overwhelming because of its sheer size, volume of information available and tremendous scope of application possibilities that it offers. The hierarchy is what comes to the rescue of the users because it provides a pattern and method to the seemingly chaotic resource of information.

There are millions of Usenet users across the globe. Major organizations, software and hardware companies and others have their own hierarchies of supernewsgroups that are managed expertly by trained employees of the company.
